8 Places (and More) to Get Your Macarons Fix

If Marketing has something called Diffusion of Innovation, and that innovation is substituted with macarons, I'd probably fall under the Laggards category. Heck, better late then never.

Searched, tasted and tested. Here are some of my picks for the macarons from around the region that deserve your attention and effort (To be fair, I will list them in alphabetic order).

1. For macarons with double fillings: Antoinette (Singapore)
Apparently, this is quite a favourite in Singapore (and among Singaporeans, who are notoriously picky eaters). Antoinette's macs have light shells that crack neatly and the ganache filling is smooth and light as well, just the right level of sweetness. The only concern is that these delicate treats cannot stand the room temperature. The simple carton packaging is easily affected by external temperature.

Comes in a total of 12 flavours, some of them are named after feminine European names. Of the 12, these are my top picks: Antoinette (milk chocolate earl grey tea ganache with raspberry confiture), Charlotte (vanilla cream with strawberry coulis), Brittany (caramel with fleur de sel or sea salt), Passion (milk chocolate passionfruit ganache), etc.

Price: Fair

2. For ice cream macarons: Fleur-de-Lys Bakeshop (Brunei Darussalam)
Satisfy your sweet tooth in Brunei Darussalam with macarons from Fleur-de-lys Bakeshop, which is said (by the locals) to be the best there. Truth be told, I can't complain when receiving these pretty and yummy treats, though I cannot yet vouch for the "best in Brunei" label. At least you know a foolproof solution to your macs craving when you're in Brunei or for gift idea from the oil-rich city-state.

The chocolate, chocolate mint and raspberry chocolate are my favourites. If you ever come to the store, do try out their ice cream macarons and some interesting new flavours such as mandarin, kaya toast, and choco caramel macarons.

3. For pretty pastel-coloured premium macarons: Huize Van Wely (Indonesia)
Huize Van Wely is well known as a premium patisserie in Jakarta. Anything that has its label will be appreciated for its price tag, thus it makes a lovely gift.

Comes in total of 8 classic flavours, such as pistachio, chocolate, vanilla, exotic (passionfruit), raspberry, blackcurrant, etc.

Price: Fair

4. For world-famous macarons: Ladurée Maison de Macarons (Singapore)
Ladurée's reputation as macarons maker is as legendary as BMW as an automobile producer. The world-renowned label quite recently opened its flagship store in Singapore, at one of Orchard Road's most visited shopping malls, Ngee Ann City. If you've never had any macarons in your life, Ladurée is a good starting point to set your standards right. As an established player (since 1862), Ladurée can never go wrong. Though I must say it's a splurge for personal consumption, it makes a generous and impressive gift to bring home from your overseas trips.

Do you dare to buy the Gold-Coated Chocolate macs? Otherwise, you can pick from the 18 flavours such as Iced Mint, Chocolate Coconut Marshmallow, Ghana Chocolate, Rose Petal, Liquorice, Chocolate Yuzu, etc.

Price: Expensive
SGD 3.80/each (SGD 7.60 for the Gold-Coated Chocolate macarons)
SGD 32/box of 6's or SGD 38 /box of 8's

5. For chewy macaron and macaron cake: Manon Chocolatier & Patissier (Indonesia)
Manon in Kelapa Gading might seem quite out of place among the clusters of famous street food and private-run F&B stalls in the north of Jakarta. It's probably the only place to get macarons in the area (please correct me if I'm wrong). The most chewy macs I've tried so far, if you like chewy macarons, then this is goods for you. And if the mini macs aren't enough, you can have them upsized in the form of macarons cake. Talk about macs obsession!

The website lists 31 flavours in total, but the availability varies daily. Some interesting flavours such as Red Velvet, Chili Truffle, Tiffany Champagne, Litchi Rose, Exotic Wasabi, Strawberry Blackpepper.

Price: Affordable
IDR 9,500/each and IDR 110,000 for a box of 12.

6. For mini macarons: Pipiltin Cocoa (Indonesia)
The macarons by Pipiltin Cocoa are quite mini (besides Manon's) and taste quite decent. If you need to urgently relief your macs-craving, Pipiltin's will suffice and won't burn a hole in your wallet.

Quite interesting, although still quite limited. I tried the Poppy Seed, Rich Chocolate Tonka, Aceh Gayo Coffee, Sea salt Caramel, Blueberry.

Price: Affordable
IDR 10,000 /piece

7. For macarons from an Hotel's Patisserie: Sweet Spot (Singapore)
From my personal experience, a five-star hotel does not necessarily guarantee an orgasm-inducing pastry shop. If your macs must come from a five-star hotel, just like the five-star hotel where you stay at, I'd strongly recommend Sweet Spot at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. I'm saying this not because I personally know the Executive Pastry Chef, but because the macs from his kitchen are truly worth the long walk to MBS's Tower 3 Lobby. The packaging is done properly, with thick carton lining, not only does it reflect the price, but also protects these delicate treats from prolonged exposure to room temperature. The macs taste better chilled, as its sweetness is slightly muted by the low temperature, allowing the delicate flavours and scent to stand out a bit more.

I saw the Bacon flavoured macs last year at my first visit to MBS, but when I returned recently, it was not available (tough luck!). The flavours vary, depending on Ryan's mood (I guess, haha!), but you can always grab the Strawberry Basil, Peanut Butter Jelly, Sea Salt Caramel, Passionfruit and Coconut macs.

Price: Fair
SGD 2.70/each (comes in box of 6 and 12)

8. For tea lovers: TWG Tea Salon & Boutique (Singapore & Indonesia)
For those who must have tea infused in anything they eat, these tea-infused macarons from TWG are perfect for you. I tried a piece on my recent trip in Singapore, the Earl Grey & Chocolate, it's medium-sized and slightly chewy and delicately tea-scented. The good thing is, you can buy TWG's macs from various locations, as its Tea Salon & Boutique can be found in many countries.

TWG's premium teas paired with classic flavours such as Earl Grey & Chocolate, 1837 Black Tea & Blackcurrant, Napoleon Tea & Caramel, etc.

Price: Fair
In Singapore it's SGD 2/each, while in Jakarta it's IDR 15,000/each

Earl Grey & Chocolate Macaron from TWG Tea on The Bridge at Marina Bay Sands (Singapore)
Alrighty, so I've listed 8 places to get your macarons fix from around the region (those listed above already passed my taste buds inspection). So, there's a macaron to suit everyone, from the gaudily expensive to the chewy ones (what's yours?). Actually I know of a few more places in Indonesia, but unfortunately, had not get to personally taste them, such as:
- Bakerzin (Singapore & Jakarta)
- Firenze Patisserie (West Jakarta)
- Pesca Ice Cream (West Jakarta) for Ice cream macarons

Even some online pastry shops in Indonesia, just to name some:

Or from the local master of macarons, Monsieur Odie Djamil. While I'm not sure if he takes any orders, you can try to tweet him at @odiedjamil.

So, do you know of any other places to get macarons from? Do share please =)

PS: Free samplers are always welcome...hahaha...just kidding ;)

  1. Amazing pics, El. And the macs look so pretty although I don't know if I want to spend 150k for a pack of them :)

    1. Thanks Rene! Haha...didn't you spend more on the boxes of Laduree last time? =P
